Technical Talent Wins Big
by Dave Murphy
ISSN 1535-3613

Dave Murphy, DGL President & ITrain founder Now is the time for techies to make a mark on their financial future. America's transformation from an industrial to a knowledge-based economy has created a demand for talented technical professionals, many of whom are fresh from our nation's engineering and computer science schools.

Some companies offer $20k signing bonuses and thousands of dollars in referral fees to current employees to help convince technical talent to join the fold.

"We are in the midst of the most far-reaching technology revolution we have ever known," said Secretary of Commerce William Daley. "There is a very real threat that technology could overwhelm us -- that it could move faster than our ability to train our people to manage it."

It's only in the past couple of years that we've heard about the shortage of IT professionals.

The dearth of technical talent isn't restricted to the engineering and comp sci groups. Every week I have contact with IT trainers around the world who are so busy they're working six days a week and at least a few evenings. They're retraining previously non-technical workers so they can use hardware and software that is an absolute requirement of their redesigned jobs.

My greatest fear is that we're not just creating a society of technology information have's and have not's but that we're creating a technical atmosphere for business that's based on the 80/20 rule. Eighty percent of the work will be done by 20 percent of the employees -- those with the technical know-how to do it...the real value to companies will be how quickly they can retrain their staff to use the new technologies.
