Spread of Viruses up 48 Percent
by Dave Murphy
ISSN 1535-3613

Dave Murphy, DGL President & ITrain founder Despite the best efforts of corporations to prevent the spread of computer software viruses, they continue to spread, according to a study released by the International Computer Security Association (ICSA).

In fact, the study suggests that viral infection is up 48 percent over last year. Viral attacks outpace the best efforts of organizations who install and use anti-virus software.

The two areas of greatest concern are macro-viruses, those that affect documents and spreadsheets, and outdated viral databases. It's as important to regularly update anti-virus software databases as it is to install the products in the first place.

IT Trainers the world over emphasize the need for vigilant anti-virus practices and the need to install anti-virus software whenever discussing viruses with our students.

The ICSA study collated data from 300 corporations and government institutions, each with at least 500 personal computers, two local area networks, and two remote locations.
