Reading the replys to this question it becomes clear
that some, many out here are not aware of the problems
that can be created by linking to "private" sites. Many
ISP's cannot handle the traffic generated by links from
popular sites, if a server is "overloaded" the question
"rights" and "freeweb" are mute.
Commercial sites like to be linked to, that's how you
sell things, advertising is good.
The only way to know for sure is to ask the author.
It is always a good idea to ask before linking, though
not required, it could avoid a lot of problems if it is
not possible to handle the traffic your link could generate.
Other points would include; Many people like to know
who is viewing thier work; What is it being used for;
Similar interests; Reciprical links; If a link is not
appropriate, other arrangments can be made.
What is so hard about letting each other know what we
are doing out here in this vast and ever expanding frontier.
