The people on the Internet are nuts if they even consider relying on outside sources (government, big brother, Bill Gates) to "protect" us from e-mail spamming. Why is it OK for people to send junk mail to our postal addresses? No one seems to be complaining about that. Even though that type of junk mail depletes natural resources (trees) which our planet needs to survive. We pay to watch cable TV along with the commercials and accept it as a part of our every day life. What's so damn different about e-mail than these two examples?
I for one want to be the one in charge of deciding whether I read or discard my mail; whether it be postal or e-mail. I often get e-mail advertisements that are very interesting and "check them out."
The web is a great place to meet people, network, gain knowledge, use as a library, etc., etc. Let's not louse it up by letting someone else take over and make the rules for us. I don't know about you, but I have no problem with reading a few lines of text, deciding whether I want to continue or not and pressing the delete key. It's better than having to tear the envelope open and read through 5 or 6 different pieces of paper before I toss it in the trash can and takes a lot less time!!! And, I don't have to haul it out to the curb for garbage pick up!
