The Internet Explorer 4.0 official release does not install a necessary
.DLL file supporting Socks 4 proxy (wsock32n.dll) correctly. This makes
it difficult to work with RideWay or any other proxy server. In order to
make IE4 to talk to any Socks 4 proxy server, including RideWay, a user
needs to manually extract the DLL from one of the IE4 distribution files
and copy it into Windows system directory.
Steps:
Phase One
NOTE: If Internet Explorer is open, Exit IE4, including Outlook
Express and all other components.
1. Start MS-DOS.
2. Change Directories (Type 'cd') to the directory where Internet Explorer
4's distribution files are located. If you do not know the directory, find
the file IE4_S4.CAB from the Start button. The directory that contains
the file is the directopry you want to change directories to.
3. Run the following commands in sequence:
c:> extract ie4_s4.cab
c:> extract ie4_4.cab wsock32n.dll
c:> copy wsock32n.dll <Windows system directory> where <Windows
system directory> is the system directory under the Windows root, normally
it is \Windows\system.
4. Restart your computer.
Phase Two
Once you have installed the wsock32n.dll., Socks proxy on Internet Explorer 4.0:
1. Start IE4
2. Click View
3. Click 'Internet Options...'
4. Click Connection,
5. Check 'Access the Internet using a proxy server' box
6. Click 'Advanced...' button,
7. Enter <Server PC's IP address, e.g. 192.168.1.1> into 'Socks'
box and 1080 into 'Port' box. Leave all other fields blank.
8. Click 'OK'
9. Click 'Apply'
10. Click 'OK'.
