STEP-BY-STEP REMOTE ACCESS HELP | BACK TO RIDEWAY HELP ON-LINE
INSTALLING TCP/IP FOR OFFICE AND HOME PCs

| The following instructions detail how to access the Internet from a home PC (running Windows 95/NT) via the office LAN (local area network): |
| The office PC must satisfy the following requirements: |
-Windows 95/NT must be installed.
-'Dial-Up Networking Server' from Microsoft Plus! must be installed if using Windows 95, (Windows NT already comes with a dial-up networking server).
-RideWay must be installed.
-The office LAN must be connected to the Internet without going
through a proxy (please verify with your network administrator).
-A modem must be installed on the PC. |
Office PC Setup (With RideWay already installed)
| Step #1: "Setting the Office PC's Network Configuration." |
-From the Control Panel, double click on the 'Network' icon.
-Locate and highlight the 'TCP/IP -> Dial-Up Adapter' component, (This component will only show up if both a network adapter card and a modem are installed).
-Click on the 'Properties' Button.
-Click on 'IP Address'.
-Click on 'Specify an IP Address' from the 'IP Address' Tab.
-In the IP Address Box, input an address such as '192.168.1.1'
-In the Subnet Mask Box, Enter "255.255.255.0"
-For the 'DNS Configuration', 'WINS Configuration', 'Advanced', 'Bindings' tabs, all the settings should be the same as those currently set for the office LAN connection (Go to the 'TCP/IP -> your network adapter card' component to verify these settings). Leave your 'Gateway' settings blank.
-Restart Windows 95 |
| Step #2: "Set up your Office PC as a Dial-Up Networking Server." |
| Note: Step 2 requires that the 'Dial-Up Networking Server' be installed
on this office PC. |
-From the 'Start->Programs->Accessories->Dial-Up Networking' window, go to the 'Connections' menu's 'Dial-Up Server' option, check
'Allow caller access'.
-If you want to assign a password so that only those who know
the password can dial into this PC, click on 'change password'.
-Click on 'Server Type' and for the 'Type of Dial-Up Server' box,
select 'PPP: Windows 95, Windows NT 3.5, Internet'.
-Under 'Advanced Options', please check 'Enable Software Compression'.
Click on 'Apply'. |
| Step #3: "Configuring RideWay for the Office PC." |
-Start RideWay.
-From the 'Server' menu, click on 'Start'.
-When prompted with the message: 'Your Dial-Up Networking is
not connected. Can your computer access the Internet via
a LAN?', click on 'Yes'.
-When prompted with the message: "Please specify the port
number and DNS Server for RideWay's SOCKS proxy server",
click on 'OK'. |
| Note: The following segment within this step is optional for
RideWay Version 1.3 |
-Locate the 'Server Control Dialog Box'.
-Under 'DNS Servers', enter the IP address for the DNS Server for the office (go to 'control panel->network->DNS configuration tab ->DNS Server Search Order' to locate this DNS address).
-Click on 'Add' and then click on 'OK'.
-The 'RideWay' window should now indicate that 'RideWay Server is running'. |
Client PC Set-up
| Step #4: "Setting the Home PC's Network Configuration." |
-From the Control Panel, double click on the 'Network' icon.
-Locate and highlight the 'TCP/IP->(Dial-Up Adapter)' component. |
| Note: If there is no network adapter card installed on the Client PC, then you may locate and highlight the 'TCP/IP' component. |
-Click on the 'Properties' Button.
-Click on 'IP Address'.
-Click on 'Specify an IP Address' from the 'IP Address' Tab.
-In the IP Address Box, input an address such as '192.168.1.2'.
The first 3 numbers of this IP address (192, 168, 1 in this case)
must match the first 3 numbers of the IP address entered in Step 1.
The last number must be different.
-In the Subnet Mask Box, Enter "255.255.255.0"
-From the 'DNS Configuration' tab, set the 'DNS Search Order'
to the IP address entered in Step 1 (i.e. 192.168.1.1).
-Restart Windows. |
| Step #5: "Make a New Connection for the Home PC's Dial-Up Networking." |
-From the 'Start->Programs->Accessories->Dial-Up Networking' window, click on 'Make New Connection'.
-For the message 'Type a name for the computer you are dialing',
enter any name (i.e. DGL Server).
-From the 'Select a Modem' option, please select the modem you wish to use.
-From the 'Configure' button, you may un-check all the boxes.
-Click on 'Next' and enter the 'area code' and 'telephone number'
for the analog telephone line attached to the office PC.
-Click on 'Finish'. |
| Step #6: "Setup a New Connection for the Client PC's Dial-Up Networking." |
-With the mouse, "right-click" on the entry (i.e. DGL Server)
you just made (step 4).
-From the 'properties' option, select 'Server Type'. For 'Type of
Dial-Up Server', select 'PPP: Windows 95, Windows NT 3.5, Internet'.
-For 'Advanced Options', check 'Enable Software Compression'.
-For 'Allowed Network Protocols', check 'TCP/IP'.
-Click on the 'TCP/IP' button.
-Click on the 'TCP/IP Settings' button and specify '192.168.1.2' (from Step 4)from for the 'IP address' box and specify '192.168.1.1 (from Step 1) for the 'Primary DNS' box.
-Check the box 'Use IP header compression'. |
| Step #7: "Setup the Proxy for your favorite applications." |
* "SOCKS host" or "Firewall host": 192.168.1.1 (from Step 1).
* "Port": 1080 |
| You should now be able to dial into the office PC and connect to the
Internet from your home PC by clicking on the entry (from Dial-Up
Networking) which you created in Step 5. |
For the Office PC
| The following assumes that the Office PC has both a network adapter card and a modem installed: |
-Go into the Control Panel
-Double Click on the 'Network' icon
-Verify that following network components are listed:
'TCP/IP -> Dial-Up Adapter' and 'TCP/IP -> LAN Adapter' are listed.
If not listed:
-Click on the 'Add' button.
-Select the 'Protocol' icon and then click on the 'Add' button.
-Under 'Manufacturers:', select 'Microsoft'.
-Under 'Network Protocols:', select 'TCP/IP' and click on 'Ok'.
-Both 'TCP/IP -> Dial-Adapter' and 'TCP/IP -> LAN Adapter' should now appear in the network component list. |
For the Home PC
| The following assumes that the Home PC has a modem installed: |
-Go into the Control Panel
-Double Click on the 'Network' icon
-Verify that one of the following network component exists: 'TCP/IP -> Dial-Up Adapter (If both a modem and network adapter card are installed) or 'TCP/IP' (If only a modem is installed).
If not listed:
-Click on the 'Add' button.
-Select the 'Protocol' icon and then click on the 'Add' button.
-Under 'Manufacturers:', select 'Microsoft'.
-Under 'Network Protocols:', select 'TCP/IP' and click on 'Ok'.
-Either 'TCP/IP' or 'TCP/IP->Dial-Up Adapter' should now appear in the network component list. |
