RideWay has some security control features that allow a manager to restrict
and monitor what access
a Client PC has to the Internet. There are a couple different scenarios
where RideWay's security
administration can be implemented:
Provide Select computers on LAN with full access
In some environments, such as a office or classroom setting, it is important
that an administrator or managers
have full access to the Internet. In this case,
* Start RideWay
* Click 'Server'
* Click 'Security Administration'
* Check 'Internet access control for internal computers.'
In the box on the left marked, 'Internal computers with full access',
you would enter the
IP addresses of the machines you want full access as follows:
Click 'Add' in the box for 'Internal computers with
full access'
Click 'Specify and IP address and subnet mask:

Repeat this step for each PC you wish to grant full access

Prevent computers on the LAN from accessing ANY site on the Internet
To prevent machines on the LAN from accessing the Internet,
* Start RideWay
* Click 'Server'
* Click 'Security Administration'
* Check 'Internet access control for internal computers.'
In the box on the right marked, 'Internal computers with no access',
you would enter the
IP addresses of the machines you want 'No' access as follows:
Click 'Add' in the box for 'Internal computers with
full access'
Click 'Specify and IP address and subnet mask.
Click OK.
In some cases, you may want some PCs to access only a select number
of
Internet sites. Conversely, you can also "Blacklist"
specific web sites.
Access to select Internet sites
Let's say that you are a manager of financial consutling firm. You
only want your staff to access certain web sites that pertain to
your business. In this case, you allow access only to a select
number of sites:
* Start RideWay
* Click 'Server'
* Click 'Security Administration'
* Click 'Internal access control for Internal computers'
* Click the box that says, 'Permit internal computers access to external computers'
* In the box on the lower left (Internal Computers), click 'Add' A box
will come
up asking you to specify a domain name or IP address. In the Internal computers
box on the lower left-hand side, enter the IP addresses of the computers
on your
LAN that you only want them to access specified sites. In this example,
say you want
to limit your staff to finance web sites such as CNNFn, The Wall
Street Journal, and
Barrons Online.
* In the box to the right marked 'External Computers' (i.e. the sites on
the Internet), you can
enter the URL (web address, www.xxx.xxx) or IP address of the web site
you only want
your staff to access.
Based on this example, your configuration in Security Administration will
look like this:

In the preceding example, The Wall Street Journal web site has been entered
as
'206.157.193.20.'
* Click 'OK'.
With these settings in place, the computers listed under 'Internal computers'
can only access the sites listed in 'External computers' If a user attempts
to access any other site on the Internet, he or she will receive an error
message
Blocking access to specific sites on
the Internet
RideWay comes with the ability to "blacklist" or block access to certain
sites on the Internet.
In this example, say you are an office manager concerned that staff
may be tempted to
log onto known sex or sports sites during office time.
* Start RideWay
* Click 'Server'
* Click 'Security Administration'
* Click 'Internal access control for Internal computers'
* Click the box that says, 'Deny internal computers access to external computers'
* In the box on the lower left (Internal Computers), click 'Add'
A box will come
up asking you to specify a domain name or IP address. In the Internal computers
box on the lower left-hand side, enter the IP addresses of the computers
on your
LAN that you do not wish to have access to specific web sites on
the Internet.
In this example, we use the ficticious web sites of 'www.porno.com' and
'www.sportsonline.net.' These addresses are entered into the 'External
computers'
box as follows:
Internal computers now have access to all sites on the Internet except
the
sites listed in External computers. If a user attempts to access one of
the external computer sites, he or she will receive an error message.
