* Start RideWay software.
* Click 'Tools'. You will see a drop down menu of the following:
Ping is a basic Internet program that lets you verify that an Internet
IP address exist.
If you have ever tried to access a site through your web browser and
had trouble
accessing the site, you can use the "Ping" function to see if that
site is on the Internet.
* Click Tools
* Click Ping. If you want to find the IP address of 'www.itserv.com',
enter and hit 'Start.'
The domain name system is the way in which IP addresses are located
and translated to IP addresses.
If you wante to find the DNS of ITServ, you would go into DNS Look
up and enter 'www.itserv.com'
or the IP address:
If you want to know how many steps, or "hops", it takes your computer
to access a specific site on
the Internet, Trace Route provides you this capability. Trace Route
is a good tool to use when
you want to know how long it takes to send a request to a specific
site and where "bottlenecks"
or "congesition" could be occurring. To Trace Route to the popular
search engine, Yahoo, you would
click Trace Route and enter, 'www.yahoo.com.'

When you configured TCP/IP for your LAN to run RideWay, you assigned
IP addresses
to your ethernet LAN cards. In IP Configuration, you can use this to
verify not only the
IP adresses you have assigned to your network cards but to other adaptor
components such as
your PPP Adaptors ("Dial-Up Adaptors"). If you have a dial-up connection
to the Internet,
in many cases, the Internet provider will assign you a "dynamically-assigned"
IP address
each time you connect. While you are connected, you can use IP Configuration
to find out what
IP address has been assigned to your PPP adaptor:
In this particular dial-up session, an IP address of '168.143.6.108
has been assigned to the PC's PPP
Adaptor. By clicking on 'More Info', you can find out what DNS this
IP address is using:
